One Tip For Better Reporting
Developing Reports in Looker Studio or any other tool is not difficult. You can easily connect to the common data sources, drag and drop charts, add the desired metrics and dimensions, apply filters, apply some color scheme and you are done. Right?
Well, that’s how a lot of novice reporting analysts do.
Experienced reporting analysts, spend a lot of time upfront in planning the proper layout, they think about the stakeholders and how they will use the report, the message they want to convey with the data, the story line so that their stakeholder don’t just look at random collection of charts and graphs but are taken through a journey with each chart/table. Each chart, table and report leads the stakeholder to easily draw the conclusions and the come up with the insights.
So next time you are tasked with creating a report, don’t jump in and randomly start adding charts, tables, pages etc. Spend time with your stakeholders to understand their role, requirements, motivations etc. Use that information to craft a story that you can then display with your report in Looker Studio, Tableau etc.
